Can I use an electric keyboard instead of a piano for lessons?

Yes, but mostly no.  I will allow students who are beginners to use an electric keyboard with at least 66 full sized keys only for the first four months of lessons. After this time the student must obtain either a piano or a digital piano.  You may rent both of these instruments from fine dealers such as Jordan Kitt's or Kunkel Piano and Organ Co.  in Cockeysville. Rentals begin at $39.00/month on up for digital pianos and $52.00/month for acoustic pianos. There are also a few good used piano dealers and refurbishers in the Baltimore area.

Do you require students to participate in recitals and competitions?

I hold two large studio recitals a year.  If a student expresses a desire to participate in the county or state piano festival then I will not discourage them. But again, I do not force them, although participation in the studio recital is greatly encouraged.  I hold regular competitions between the students and in teams.  I believe that healthy competition is necessary for proper musical development for each student. Is it better to rent or buy an instrument for my child?

Both ways have their merits.  Rental programs are a great way to put a relatively small investment into music lessons during the initial stages of your child's musical development. After a short period, however, it is best to purchase a quality instrument.   For more detailed information and what to look for when renting an instrument click here.
